Sleek and matte black with an embossed VidOn.me logo, you can see that a lot of time was thought about the unboxing experience and feels very reminiscent of Apple. That was my first reaction when unboxing the VidOn Box. This thing really is attractive. The VidOn Box uses a\u00a0unibody aluminium shell which is an appealing\u00a0champagne color. I was worried that the box would look out of place next to my equipment but it fits in nicely. The gold color is distinct but not distractingly\u00a0so. The aluminium shell\u00a0not only gives the device a premium feel, but it also adds weight for stabilisation and doubles as a giant heatsink to dissipate heat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">The front of the box features a non-descript glossy panel that hides the IR sensor. When the Vidon Box is powered on, a dull white light hidden inside the front panel acts as the power notification. Unfortunately, the box is lacking a physical power button which is a shame. Instead, it boots as soon as it\u2019s plugged in. Below this is the 3 standard Android buttons \u2013 Menu, Back and Home\u00a0and\u00a0a volume rocker.\u00a0However, the giant gaping hole here? No media buttons. At all. For a box that is media-centric, this is really disappointing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">However, it does have a\u00a0nice rubbery coating that prevents it from slipping from your hands.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #444444;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Initial_Impressions\"><\/span>Initial Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Booting the device was reasonable, getting to\u00a0a usable state in approximately 50\u00a0seconds.\u00a0It booted with a resolution of 720p, which I needed to manually adjust to my TV\u2019s 1080p resolution rather than it automatically being detected. This is clearly for compatibility reasons, as for those of you who are still rocking 720p TV sets, default 1080p output can be a nightmare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">On the first boot, the VidOn Box\u00a0loads a wizard to guide you through the setup process. This is a very nice touch, as it ensures that you get the device set up correctly the first time.\u00a0The only issue I experienced was a lack of clarity of where to go after I\u2019d set up my wifi connection. After I\u2019d entered my passkey, I thought I\u2019d need to select next to continue the wizard. This wasn\u2019t the case, with me needing to actually\u00a0go back to the network setup step and then click next, as the wifi option had now turned green. I\u2019d suggest that once an internet connection is detected, the wizard should automatically continue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">One thing that I hated, with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, was that I was forced to create a VidOn account and bind the included\u00a0VidOn Membership card in order to complete the wizard. Using a very dark set of greys and blacks help convey the premium feel the device is going for. It\u2019s split into 3 tabs \u2013 My Apps, Files and Settings. My Apps contains a scrolling list of apps you have installed. The device only comes with the two VidOn XBMC versions you see in the above screenshot \u2013 one is VidOn XBMC Pro and the other is VidOn XBMC (more on this below).\u00a01-click installations for Hulu Plus, Netflix and Pinterest are also available \u2013 denoted by a small download arrow on the bottom-right of each icon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">One thing that did bug me was that although the device had been set to 1080p output, as reported by my TV, the device UI is only being output at 720p and then upscaled. Whilst from a UI perspective, this is not really a massive issue, it meant that every Android app I tested would only render\u00a0at 720p. This causes some massive headaches \u2013 the native YouTube app refused to expose 1080p streams and stock Kodi was rendering at 720p and upscaling too. The only was to get true 1080p playback was to use VidOn XBMC, which is a shame.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">The Google Play store was added in a recent software update which is great. I had no issues installing apps but don\u2019t bother trying to use it with the included IR remote. I wasn\u2019t even able to reach the search function without using my\u00a0<a title=\"MeLE F10 Deluxe \" href=\"http:\/\/www.geekbuying.com\/item\/MeLE-F10-Deluxe-2-4GHz-Wireless-Fly-Air-Mouse-Keyboard-Game-Controller-6-Axial-Gyro-IR-Learning-for-Android-PC-TV-Box-338661.html\">Mele F10 Deluxe<\/a>\u00a0air mouse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">For you lovers of root access, the VidOn Box does not come pre-rooted.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #444444;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"VidOn_XBMC\"><\/span>VidOn XBMC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">VidOn\u2019s key\u00a0differentiator of the VidOn Box is VidOn XBMC. This is a custom fork of XBMC\u00a0that offers a few features above the standard XBMC\/Kodi install, namely\u00a0full Bluray menu support \u2013 something which has traditionally been a challenge on XBMC. However,\u00a0VidOn XBMC\u2019s 13.2 Gotham base is a few releases behind Kodi 14.0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">VidOn splits VidOn XBMC into two versions \u2013 a \u201cstandard\u201d version which is similar to vanilla XBMC and VidOn XBMC Pro, which requires a VidOn Membership to enable Bluray menu support and HD audio passthrough. On starting the Pro version, you\u2019re asked to log into your VidOn account to verify your licence. Other than this, I wasn\u2019t able to identify any other differences. It would be nice if this was integrated into a single app, rather than needing two separate icons, as it just adds unnecessary clutter and causes confusion.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #444444;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"VidOn_Membership\"><\/span>VidOn Membership<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">I can\u2019t give a full review without mentioning the VidOn membership. Whilst by no means required, it does offer a few perks such as OTA updates, Blu-Ray Menu Navigation and HD Audio Passthrough. There are some additional perks offered for VidOn\u2019s other products. For more information, see the comparison\u00a0<a class=\"ext-link\" style=\"color: #82b965;\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/vidon.me\/vidon_membership.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">The cost of a 12 month VidOn Membership is $15. Whilst not expensive, you do need to consider whether you\u2019ll need one and build this into your costs accordingly. Thankfully, VidOn includes a 12-month membership inside the box so you can evaluate whether it\u2019s truly worth it for you.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #444444;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"VidOn_Box_Media_Playback\"><\/span>VidOn Box Media Playback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">I started my testing using\u00a0<a class=\"ext-link broken_link\" style=\"color: #82b965;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.antutu.videobench&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Antutu Video Tester\u00a02.2<\/a>. Stock Kodi was clearly rendering at 720p then being upscaled, which means you are effectively locked into VidOn XBMC if you have a 1080p screen which is unfortunate.<\/p>\n<p>Hi10p playback was a no-go, with the 720p file\u00a0lagging badly, and the 1080p file freezing up almost immediately.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"VidOn_Box_Gaming_Performance\"><\/span>VidOn Box\u00a0Gaming Performance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Please note that due to device limitations, all gaming is at 720p then upscaled. Whilst this means that the framerate is better, graphical fidelity is sacrificed.<\/p>\n<p>To test gaming performance, I installed 2 games \u2013 1 2D and 1 3D title:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a class=\"ext-link broken_link\" style=\"color: #82b965;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.rovio.angrybirds&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Angry Birds<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"ext-link\" style=\"color: #82b965;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.vectorunit.purple.googleplay&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Beach Buggy\u00a0Racing<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gaming performance on the VidOn Box was excellent. The 2D\u00a0Angry Birds was exceptionally smooth, with no noticable lag. I connected\u00a0my\u00a0<a title=\"Tronsmart Mars G01\" href=\"http:\/\/www.geekbuying.com\/item\/Tronsmart-Mars-G01-2-4GHz-Wireless-Gamepad-Support-Controller-for-Android-Cell-Phone---PS3---Tablet-PC---MINI-PC---TV-BOX---Black-329415.html\">Tronsmart Mars G01<\/a>controller to test out Beach Buggy Racing and was able to max out the graphical\u00a0settings whilst maintaining near-30 FPS at all times which is great.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of Bluetooth meant my\u00a0Moga Pro Power\u00a0had to sit this test out.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"VidOn_Box_Wifi_Performance\"><\/span>VidOn Box Wifi Performance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To test wireless speeds, I used\u00a0<a class=\"ext-link\" style=\"color: #82b965;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.pzolee.android.localwifispeedtester&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">WiFi Speed Test<\/a>\u00a0to transfer a 100 MB file to and from a Samba share. This test was completed 3 times and the average speed was recorded.
